according to vs based on

先講講這兩個詞的詞性,according to 是一個 preposition,而 based on 是來自 base … on,是一個 phrasal verb,但由於它經常以被動態或分詞形式出現,所以大家看到的都是 based on 為主。

according to 意思是 as stated by(據…
According to Ella, the movie is not as good as expected.(據 Ella 說,這部電影並不像預期的那樣好。)
According to news reports, the crime rate in the city is on the rise.(據新聞報道,該城市的犯罪率不斷上升。)
He was fired for poor performance from the company, according to rumours.(根據傳言,他因業績不佳被公司解僱。)

Students will be put in different groups according to their ability.(學生會按各自的能力進行分組。)
You need to play the game according to the rules.(你需要按照規則來玩遊戲。)
If everything goes according to plan, we’ll arrive next week.(如果一切按計劃進行,我們將於下週抵達。)

再談談 based on,雖知道 base 本義是「根基,基礎」,故此 base … on 就是「以…
The movie is based on real-life events.(這部電影是根據真實事件改編的。)
Our relationship is based on mutual respect.(我們的關係是建立在互相尊重的基礎上。)
His first novel was based on his own experiences as a journalist.(他的第一部小說是基於他自己作為記者的經歷。)

以上 based on 的意思是用於 verb to be 後面,一般不會與 according to 混淆,真正令人把兩者混在一起是當 according to based on 都用於句子開首的時候,先看看以下兩句:
__________ scientists, climate change is getting more and more serious.
__________ what scientists have found, we need to take climate change seriously.
以上哪一句你會用 according to、哪一句用 based on 呢?

According to scientists, climate change is getting more and more serious.(據科學家稱,氣候變化越來越嚴重。)
Based on what scientists have found, we need to take climate change seriously.(根據科學家的發現,我們需要認真對待氣候變化。)

According to our records, you’ve been absent five times.(根據我們的記錄,你已經缺席了五次。)
According to a recent report, most people do not take enough exercise.(根據最近的一份報告,大多數人都沒有做足夠的運動。)
According to witnesses, the robbery was committed by two teenage boys.(據目擊者說,這樁搶劫案是由兩名男青年幹的。)
Based on the evidence, the police arrested three suspects.(基於這些證據,警方逮捕了三名嫌疑犯。)
Based on her pronounced accent, she must not have grown up here.(根據她明顯的口音,她一定不是在這裡長大的。)
Based on research findings, we can conclude that pregnant women should not receive this treatment.(根據研究結果,我們可以得出結論,孕婦不宜接受這種治療。)

I don’t think I’ve ever received a letter from him.
Have you ever been to Prague?
Have you ever thought of changing your job?

Nothing ever seems to annoy her.
No one ever told me what had happened.
He hardly ever does the housework.
Neither of us had ever skied.
I promise I’ll never ever do that again.

If you’re ever in Melbourne, come and visit us.
If ever you move house, make sure you get a good removal company.

This is the worst movie I’ve ever seen.
That is the best Italian restaurant ever.
I haven’t met her for years and she’s as pretty as ever.
The government is going to spend more than ever on education.
Young people have more opportunities than ever before.

Social issues have become ever more complicated in recent years.

He’s turned into an alcoholic ever since he got divorced.
As ever, I was the last one to know the truth.
We never knew that David was ever such a good singer.
What ever have you done to him?
Who ever would want to go there?
That’s a real challenge if ever there was one!

it isn’t 和 it’s not 一樣嗎?

我們自小學英的否定式例如 No, it is not一般都會學它的 contraction縮略形式即是 No, it isn’t當你慢慢學多了會發現有另一個 contraction就是 No, it’s not問題來了究竟 No, it isn’t No, it’s not 有沒有別?

首先通常課本都會教 it isn’t 這種形式似乎是比較正統但現實中又好像 it’s not 比較常見至少看英美電影的時候通常聽到的是 it’s not 而非 it isn’t這樣姑且可以說 it’s not 比較 colloquial其實 isn’t 還好印象中 aren’t 幾乎從來沒聽過因為 they’re (not) 的讀音是等於 there實在沒有必要說 they aren’t

it’s not it isn’t 常用也不難理解因為 it’s not 只有兩個音節 it isn’t 卻有三個音節根據語言學上的簡約定律人是會自動選擇最簡單的表達法。

好了那到底 it isn’t it’s not 在實際用法上有沒有別?

原來兩個表達法最大的差別在於 not it isn’t 基本上沒有明顯的重音但說 it’s not 卻可以把重音放在 not所以有些 native speakers 認為 it’s not 是比較 emphatic加強語氣

A. Is it raining?
B. No, it isn’t. / No, it’s not.
A. Isn’t it raining now?
B. No, it’s NOT.重音在 not

You’re NOT allowed to do that如果說 You aren’t allowed to do that 就沒有這個效果

finite vs non-finite

The proposal, if accepted by the government, will mean significant changes to the education system.

有人問 ‘if accepted by the government’ 是一個怎麼樣的句子結構?

You can stay for the weekend if you like,這句的 main clause You can stay for the weekend,而 subordinate clause if you like

再深入淺出一點,以動詞 be 為例,若它以 am, is, are, was, were 的形式出現,就是 finite verb,因為這些都能顯示時態;若它以 been being 的形式出現,就是 non-finite verb,因為單從 been being 兩個字形是看不出甚麼時態的。

1. As I am the person in charge, I have to inform all the parties involved.
2. Being the person in charge, I have to inform all the parties involved.

上句的 main clause I have to inform all the parties involved,而 subordinate clause 則有兩種表達方式,一是以 finite clause 表示:As I am the person in charge‘am’ 是帶有時態的;二是以 non-finite clause 表示:Being the person in charge‘being’ 不能顯示時態

Being the person in charge, my duty is to inform all the parties involved 就不對了,因為 being the person in charge 的主語一定要是 I 而不能是 my duty

Non-finite clause
1. to-infinitive,例如:
She arrived early (in order) to get a good seat.
2. present participle,例如:
Having experienced a lot of difficulties, he realized the importance of being patient.
3. past participle,例如:
Trained as a ballet dancer since young, she amazed the audience with her graceful movements.
4. subordinate conjunction
有些連接詞可以後接 non-finite clause,如 before, after, when, if, unless, though, although 等,例如:
The boy was found fully conscious, though injured.

The proposal, if accepted by the government, will mean significant changes to the education system.
句中的 if accepted by the government 是一個 non-finite clause,本來的 finite clause if it is accepted by the government,只不過這個寫法有點累贅,所以把 it is 刪去,句子看上去便簡潔得多。
