UK or Britain?

眾所周知，英國是由 England + Wales + Scotland + Northern Ireland 所組成，但它們再細分組合還有不同的名稱：

England + Wales = Britain（不列顛）；

England + Wales + Scotland = Great Britain（大不列顛）；

England + Wales + Scotland + Northern Ireland = United Kingdom（聯合王國）；

英國的國名全寫是 The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland，但為了方便書寫和對話，一般都是簡稱為 (the) UK 或 Britain。

有人形容英國是 ‘a country of countries’，因為對英國的政治體系來說，四個 regions 都可以稱為 country，但傳統上 Wales 有時被稱為 the Principality（公國），而 Northern Ireland 有時被稱為 the Province（省）。去年 Scotland 經過公投決定是否成為一個獨立國家，最後是 55% 反對獨立，45% 支持獨立，結果 Scotland 仍然是屬於 United Kingdom。
