Vocabulary 是「生字」嗎？

筆者發覺不少人對 vocabulary 這個詞有點誤解，以為它就等於中文的「生字」，嚴格來說，vocabulary 並不是這個意思。

一般人初學某種語言都會碰到很多「生字」，這個「生」是「陌生」的意思，所以「生字」就是你不認識的字或詞語，但是英文的 vocabulary 卻不是這樣，vocabulary 的意思是 ‘all the words known and used by a person’，換言之，vocabulary 其實是指你已認識並且懂得使用的「詞彙」。

「生字」用英文來說就是 new word，當你學懂一個 new word 後，它就成為你的 vocabulary。此外，vocabulary 也可以指一個人對某種語言所認識的「詞彙量」，所以 vocabulary 可以搭配一些跟量化有關的詞語，例如 She has a wide / rich / limited / narrow Chinese vocabulary 或 This book can help you expand / enrich / widen / extend your English vocabulary。

一個人所掌握的 vocabulary 還可以分為 active vocabulary 和 passive vocabulary：active vocabulary 是指你知道意思並且經常使用的詞彙，而 passive vocabulary 是指你知道意思但很少使用的詞彙。舉例說，你讀小說時可能曾經見過 desolate 這詞，大概知道它是「孤獨、悲傷」的意思，但你寫作的時候總是想不到 desolate 一詞，那麼 desolate 只是存在於你腦海的 passive vocabulary。

最後，我們中文經常會說「我的字典裡沒有…」，比如幾年前的一句流行歌詞「我的字典裡沒有放棄」，這句話用英文表達不能說 ‘Give up’ is not in my dictionary，應該要說 ‘Give up’ is not in my vocabulary。
